Cheer Tryout Procedure

Information about tryouts for the 2015-2016 season
Tryouts for the 2015-2016 team will be held Saturday, April 18. A mandatory clinic for tryouts will be held from Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, April 17, 2015, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Tryouts and clinic will be held in the Wellness Center, Room 105. Tryout attire is a solid colored shirt and shorts; they can be any combination of orange navy, white and/or gray. (Example: orange shirt with navy shorts). An application for the college and cheer tryouts must be postmarked by Monday, April 13, 2015.

The main purpose of the tryout is to select the best overall representatives for Wallace State College. This factor, as well as demonstrated technical skills, aids the coach in choosing the best all-around members for the team. During the mandatory tryout clinic, the coaches may make cuts, with the assistance of experience judges, until the final squad is selected. The format of the tryout is that of a clinic where a progression of skills are taught by the coaches and former WSCC cheerleaders. Participants are then given ample time and opportunity to practice and demonstrate the skills before cuts are made.

Although the required skills may vary from year to year, there are some requirements which are standard. Tumbling skills are a standing back handspring; standing back tuck, back handspring -back tuck, and a tumbling pass (three tricks or more). Stunt skill requirements are based upon past team members' abilities and overall talent level of participants. A toss extension, toss shoulder stand, and toss lib will be required, as well as a toss heel stretch with a full-down cradle. The cheerleading program consists of up to twenty-four members. Lion cheerleaders cheer for all men's and women's basketball games and comprise the National competition squad. The Wallace State cheerleading squad is one of the premier community college squads in the nation. The WSCC Cheerleaders won the UCA National Championship in 2004 and 2006. The squad represents the college at several on campus events and are ambassadors for the Wallace State throughout the community.
